Message from the Chairperson
Elaine Donoghue, MD
We Need Your Help - Complete the Survey Today!
Welcome to the fall
In last month's newsletter,
we asked you to complete our online survey to document
your interests/activities in early education and child
care. Thank you to the 33 members who have completed
this! If you have not yet done this, please do so right
away - the Executive Committee would like to discuss
the results in early October, and your feedback is very
important to us as we begin our work as a new Section.
If you complete the survey and send a message to childcare@aap.org
we will send you a new resource and will put your name
in a drawing to receive a packet of AAP resources.
PLEASE
CLICK HERE to complete the Section online survey
NOW.
Membership Update
I want to take this opportunity to provide you with
an update regarding our Section on Early Education and
Child Care membership. During July 2006, membership
in the Section increased from 203 to 225, or a total
of 22 members! This is exciting news as we continue
our recruitment efforts.
Thank you for your continued support in the Section
on Early Education and Child Care Initiatives.
Sincerely,
Elaine
2. Resources:
Resources Available Regarding Lessons Learned From
Hurricane Katrina:
There are 2 new resources to help you plan ahead for
unexpected emergencies or disasters. As you review these,
please remember that a majority of young children are
in early education and child care settings during the
day, so it's important to remind parents to talk to
their child's caregiver or teacher about how to communicate
and where to meet, if something unexpected occurs. In
your work with child care programs and other child health
advocates, you can emphasize the need to communicate
up front as well.
- A Disaster Preparedness Plan for Pediatricians
Disaster Preparedness Plan for Pediatricians -- One
of Hurricane Katrina's harshest lessons was the importance
of a solid and comprehensive disaster plan. Pediatricians
need to prepare themselves and their practices so
that we can better care for children during and after
the next catastrophe. This preparedness handbook is
targeted specifically to pediatricians and draws upon
the experiences of physicians, nurses, and families
who witnessed Katrina first-hand, as well as input
from other experts in preparedness.
- A Family Readiness Kit
A family readiness kit has been prepared to help Mississippians
prepare themselves and their families for future disasters.
The lessons learned from Hurricane Katrina taught
that we have not done enough to prepare ourselves
for what might occur. This kit contains information
about how to prepare yourself as well as how to work
with your neighborhood and community and how to deal
with the situations that children may encounter after
a disaster.

for additional information on both documents.
In addition, the National Association for Child
Care Resource and Referral Agencies (NACCRRA) has just
launched their
Nationwide Child Care Disaster Planning Initiative

on their web site here.
These resources include:

Child Care Ready?: A Disaster-Planning Guide for Child

and for parents:

The Healthy Child Care Consultant Network Support
Center (NSC) is delighted to announce the launch of
our new website and to invite you to visit it here.
The NSC, funded by the Maternal and Child Health Bureau,
supports the goals of Healthy Child Care America and
the state Early Childhood Comprehensive Systems by strengthening
statewide networks of child care health consultants
(CCHCs). The website is designed to support CCHCs, local
child care providers, state health and child care leaders,
and others interested in child care health consulting.
It includes:
CCHC Registry - The Registry contains profiles
of active CCHCs who were trained by the National Training
Institute for Child Care Health Consultants (NTI) or
by NTI graduates. State and national policy makers and
child care providers can search the Registry for information
about CCHCs in a given state or geographic area, and/or
with specific expertise.
State CCHC Profiles - The profiles tell the
story of CCHC activities in each state and territory.
Each profile includes information on ways that states
and territories define, fund, train, and use health
consultants as well as selected demographic data and
contact information for child care and health care leaders.
A powerful Facts Wizard enables site users to search
and compare CCHC data across states and territories.
Resources - Resources include links to relevant
websites, articles and other publications, and state
CCHC resources. It also includes the NSC's recent publication,
The Influence of Child Care Health Consultants in Promoting
Children's Health and Well-Being: A Report of Selected
Resources.
3. News and Announcements:
International Conference on Health and Safety in
Child Care
The AAP Provisional Section on Early Education and Child
Care and Section on International Child Health are working
in partnership with key leadership organizations to
plan an international child care health and safety conference
that will likely be held sometime in 2008. About 27
representatives from 17 national organizations (including
the American Public Health Association, the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention, Canadian Paediatric
Society, National Foundation for Infectious Diseases,
Association of Maternal and Child Health Programs, National
Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners, Maternal
and Child Health Bureau and the Office of Head Start)
met July 25-26, 2006 to begin planning the first international
conference on child care health and safety. The AAP
had worked with some of these organizations to coordinate
similar national conferences in 1984 and 1992. During
this Conference Organizing Committee meeting, the group
clarified the conference goals and educational objectives,
identified key sponsors and funding organizations, and
developed an organizing structure to facilitate future
planning. Participants concluded that there is a clear
need for an international conference to occur within
the next few years. The Executive Committee for the
Conference Organizing Committee will facilitate the
work of 3 subcommittees to move the planning forward
(Finance and Budget, Program Committee, and Marketing
and Promotions).

Care 2008. If you are interested in getting involved,
