AAP Children’s Health Topics
The AAP Web site provides resource pages on a wide range of children’s health topics. To reach the resource page on asthma and allergies, click here.

Healthy Kids, Healthy Care
This comprehensive Web site (which AAP members helped to develop) was created for parents with children in child care. Based on Caring for Our Children, this Web site provides information on a variety of child care health and safety topics as well as strategies and resources to help you talk with your child’s caregivers about how to improve health and safety practices.

North Carolina Child Care Health and Safety Bulletin
The NC Child Care Health and Safety Bulletin is a bimonthly bulletin that includes in-depth information about health and safety concerns in child care settings, as well as information that child care programs can share with parents. Here are some issues related to asthma:

Healthy Childcare
Healthy Childcare is a bimonthly publication for child care programs that covers health and safety topics. Published 6 times a year, each issue includes information on health, safety, illnesses, medication administration, staff health, health education activities, and more. Reproducible parent information sheets and mini-posters are included. Below are some topics that have been featured related to asthma:

Allergy & Asthma Network Mothers of Asthmatics
This Web site offers tips to help child care professionals understand the special needs of children with asthma. Parents and grandparents can also find information, including tips on how to hire a good babysitter to care for their child with asthma.

Here are several different handouts that show how to use asthma equipment properly:

Help Your Child Gain Control Over Asthma
This easy to read brochure provides parents of children with asthma with the information they need to improve their children's quality of life. It is filled with tips on managing asthma by developing a management plan and following some simple steps to reduce triggers. The brochure also includes helpful visuals.

Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America
This Web site has information about “Wee Wheezers,” a validated asthma education for parents and young children in English and Spanish. Find other educational programs such as the “Asthma & Allergy Essentials for Child Care Providers” here.

Long Beach Alliance for Children with Asthma
Not only does this Web site provide an overview of asthma, but it also includes a list of other organizations' Web sites and newsletters. Click here for the educational materials.


Fact Sheets, Videos, and Other Materials Related to Child Care

California Childcare Health Program
The California Childcare Health Program provides a variety of fact sheets on health and safety topics for parents, child care providers, and child care health consultants in English and Spanish. Here are some resources related to Asthma:

Healthy Child Care Pennsylvania
The Pennsylvania AAP Chapter has developed many materials and activities to support quality improvement in early education and child care programs. Check out these resources on asthma:

Checklist: How Asthma-Friendly is your Child Care Setting?
Available in both English and Spanish, this printable checklist by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute asks seven questions that parents should consider when determining how well their child-care setting assists children with asthma. Also see How Asthma-Friendly is Your School?

Handbook and Videos for Child Care Providers
Asthma Care Training for Child Care Providers ” by the California Asthma Public Health Initiative is a streaming video in English and Spanish explaining asthma and demonstrating medication administration. This Web site also provides a written document explaining symptoms, treatment, and management of asthma in “Asthma Education for Childcare Providers” by the San Diego Asthma Initiative. Managing Asthma in School
The US Environmental Protection Agency has a Web Page on Managing Asthma in School. Download “Managing Asthma in the School Environment” to learn about environmental asthma triggers commonly found in schools and ways to reduce student and staff exposure to triggers in your school.

Video: Sesame Street A is for Asthma
Children and the adults who care for them can learn to manage it thanks to the clear, simple and catchy messages in this lively bilingual video starring Elmo, Rosita, and other Sesame Street friends.


Resources for Health Professionals

AAP Schooled in Asthma Program
The Schooled in Asthma project developed, implemented, and is currently evaluating a training program encouraging pediatricians to incorporate school health concepts with current asthma treatment guidelines. Obtain an accurate asthma history for by using these tools and forms.
